What is a Doula

What is a doula?

The role of a doula is to provide physical, emotional, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period. A doula guides the expectant mother and partner towards feeling empowered, safe, and validated. Variables during labor often change, but a doula can provide consistent care and can act as those changes arise. They can offer advice in regards to breathing, positioning, and massage techniques.

Why should I work with a doula?

There is overwhelming evidence that shows how birth doulas improve outcomes, including shorter labor time, decreased reliance on pain medications, and increased satisfaction with a mother’s birthing experience. “Continuous support from a person who is present solely to provide support, is not a member of the woman’s own network, is experienced in providing labor support, and has at least a modest amount of training (such as a doula), appears beneficial.” (DONA International, www.dona.org)
